Mais, oui!

Oh, France. I had forgotten how much I adore France. The flights were fine and aptly boring and full of bad movies. The first 24 hours here have been delightful. A quick run down of the ups and downs of being here thus far:

Bon!
  • I had a delightful chocolate croissant for breakfast this morning. Light, caramelized shell, soft, delicately layered inside. Just enough chocolate which was neither sweet nor bitter. So good.
  • Had a number of things I had not seen for months for dinner last night: salad, avocado, good bread, a variety of cheeses. God, yes.
  • There are bathrooms everywhere. They are free. Whoa.
  • It's authentically cold; sweater wearing weather that makes you flush in the cheeks.
  • There's hot water in the taps and I can drink in the shower.
  • People hold hands here and there's a proportional number of women on the streets.

Mal...
  • This country is so expensive. And the dollar is doing so poorly.
  • No, I mean really, really expensive. For the price of the train from the airport here I could have taken a palanquin the same distance in India.
  • After initial skepticism towards the lack of toilet paper in India, I kinda miss their watery ways. TP now feels so harsh on my delicate tush.

Bonjour mon ami!

biz,
jen

Hello, and hurray that you are safe and content on the fine continent of Europe! Does Mexico seem like a distant dream yet? Your final bon makes me think of David's horror at the "public displays of affection" here, but I am with you - it is very bon to be somewhere where affection is not shameful, and there are avocadoes (even though your posts about the crazy country that is India have done nothing but add to my desire to go there... except maybe the getting-bitten-by-a-dog one). Having a lovely time pretending to be in Amelie, and wot Jen said - good luck with the apprenticeship. x

salut!

are you still looking for housing? will you be in the south at all? if so, I can contact a couple friends there and my chef friend who may be able to find you an apprenticeship somewhere or other. let me know.

i hope all is well, glad to hear you don't have rabies!

Pas croissant au chocolat: pain au chocolat ou chocolatine dans le sud de la France.

:)

True in French, but not quite right in English. Though the shape is not that of a croissant, the tasty breakfast pastry is near universally called a chocolate croissant in my native tongue.
